I’ve worked with old, damaged and non-running vehicles for years, and one thing I often find is that a car can still have useful value even when it is no longer worth repairing.
That is essentially what auto salvage is about, working out what can still be recovered from a vehicle through reusable parts, major components, metal and other recyclable material.

What Does Auto Salvage Mean?
Auto salvage means recovering whatever useful value is left in a vehicle. Depending on the car, that may include:
- Engines and gearboxes
- Panels and wheels
- Batteries
- Other reusable components
- Metal and recycling material
A vehicle does not have to be running to have salvage value. I look at the condition of the car, what components are still there and whether those parts have useful demand.
What Types of Cars Can Be Salvaged?
From what I see, salvage is most relevant when a vehicle is no longer practical to keep or repair. That can include:
- Cars that no longer start
- Vehicles with engine or gearbox problems
- Accident-damaged cars
- Cars with no WoF or rego
- Older vehicles with high kilometres or rust
- Cars where repair costs no longer make sense
What Affects the Value of a Salvage Car?
There is no fixed value that applies to every salvage vehicle. When assessing a car, the main things I look at include:
- Make, model and year
- Overall condition
- Parts demand
- Whether useful components are still present
- Whether the car starts or drives
- Missing or damaged parts
- Remaining metal and recycling value
A complete vehicle with useful components will generally have more salvage potential than a stripped shell.

Which Car Parts Can Still Have Value?
A damaged car does not necessarily mean every part of it is damaged. Depending on the vehicle, components such as the engine, gearbox, panels, wheels, battery and other parts may still be reusable.
In practice, it comes down to the individual car. A part only has useful salvage value if it is in suitable condition and there is demand for it.
That is also why two similar damaged vehicles can end up with quite different salvage values.
What Happens to the Rest of a Salvage Vehicle?
Once the reusable parts have been identified, the remaining vehicle can still contain metal and other recyclable material.
Some vehicles have more value in their parts. Others, particularly older or heavily damaged cars, may have less reusable value and rely more on their remaining material value.
The aim is to recover what can reasonably be reused or recycled rather than treating the entire vehicle as waste.
